Nassau County Public Golf Courses

Nassau County has 3 courses that have ranked as the top three in the Long Island Press “Best of Long Island” golf category. Ask anyone who lives on Long Island where the best public golf courses in Nassau County are located, chances are you will get the same answer from most golfers, and the Long Island Press annual “Best of” contest concurs.

Bethpage Black is, by far, at the top of the list… the first public golf course in the USA to ever host a US OPEN championship, and in fact, hosted the OPEN twice in 2002 and 2009. It was designed by Tillinghast and built in 1936. “The Black” is not for the novice player, but there are four other courses at Bethpage to accommodate every level of play..

Another challenging and picturesque course in Nassau County is ‘Harbor Links’ in Port Washington…. With spectacular views of Hempstead Harbor and Long Island Sound, a round at Harbor Links will not easily be forgotten. They also feature an executive 9 hole course for those golfers who prefer a less challenging track.

Finally, the number three ranked course in Nassau is Eisenhower Park, offering 4 championship 18 hole tracks, including their signature ‘Red Course’ which has hosted one of the “Champions Tour” events.. The courses are easy to walk and are in excellent condition and welcome golfers of all skill levels.

Suffolk County Public Golf Courses

Suffolk County, Long Island is the eastern most part of the island and features some of the most challenging courses which are open to the public. Certainly Long Island National and Tallgrass are among the favorites which are links style courses that can make you feel like you are in Scotland or Ireland with the combination of tall fescue grass, wind, and ‘spicy’ greens.

Smithtown Landing Golf Course is carved through the tall oaks of Long Island’s north shore and features one of the most spectacular and picturesque finishing holes on the Island, with a stunning view of the Nissequogue River and multi-million dollar homes and estates.

Of course one of the newest and most beautiful Suffolk County venues is ‘Cherry Creek’. Cherry Creek appeals to so many golfers because it features two completely different 18 hole tracks, one called “Woods”, with challenging dog legs, water holes, and tree lined fairways, and the “Links”, which has beautiful elevated tees and links layout, leading up to a dramatic and challenging 644 yard Par 6 finishing hole ! Cherry Creek also enjoys close proximity to the Long Island Vineyard region (most vineyards offer daily wine tasting) and the Tanger Outlets, a mecca for designer outlets.
